My Italy Dj Trip
In 2008 I was flown over to Livigno, Italy to Dj for a solid 3 weeks…
Here's my story and experience…
January 2008 I went to Livigno on an incentive trip to ski with the rest of the top performers at the company I was working for. I made a point of packing my music and headphones for the journey! On the night we arrived, just dropped the bags in the hotel room and the team got together for a night on the town, starting with Kushtall Disco Pub. Soon I was chatting to the owner, Erio, to jam a little demo set and at first he was not keen at all telling me to come back tomorrow… I was persistent and told him to give me 30 mins or less and if he doesn't like what he hears, then I'll hand back to his resident. So he agreed..
30mins later, both Erio and his resident Dj asked me to please stay and carry on playing – the people were loving it, I was loving it and so was the boss 😀 At the en of the evening I told him that I am in Livigno for 10 days so I'll come around and play again during my visit.
We also visited places like Hotel Alegra, Miky's and our famous after party spot, KOKODIS – This place is off the hook with a massive cave like set up and a dj box built inside the jaws of shark (and I mean HUGE – wish I had pics of it!)
After a day or two of skiing and having a jol on the slopes, it was time to hit the decks at Kushtall – the place was packed!! Let me try and create the picture of the evening for you – most of the clubs in Livigno are called “disco pubs” – most of them are in the basement of the a hotel (not meaning skanky basement vibe at all), in fact, very cosy and patriotic of its own vibe and history – so you have walls full of pics of people skiing, and some semi naked running a street mile or maybe it was a group of drunk guys having fun on a night out, braving the cold – the bar is filled with signed champaign bottles from so many different celebs and other less famous people from all parts of the world. The layout of Kushtall is wood with seating areas all round and long bar (very need in these parts lol) – and if you are a smoker, your smokers corner is restricted to this tiny room in the back corner, roughly 5mx5m in size – so you can only imagine how intense it gets in there lol! The place can handle max about 200 people, they usually pack it with about 250 or more – it gets TIGHT in there (this is the part where I love having my space in the dj booth). So you have 250 people from all over the world in front of you, maybe 5 of them can speak english – do you have any idea what it was like trying to understand what some of the people said when they came and chatted to me (to this day I am still not sure if some of them requested songs, or whether they insulted me to my face lol) The only local drink that stuck to me was Vodka Anannas (no idea how its spelled) – which is Vodka and Pineapple juice. Thing about the Italians is that there is no single or double tot measures, it's HALF alcohol, HALF mix – 50/50 baby! Then there's the usual Jagermeister, Grappa etc etc..
