The History

Mickey has been Dj'ing since 1994, when a friend and I started a small mobile disco doing school socials and school holiday gigs at our local civic centre, packing the hall on some nights with 700 kids. A year later, I got my first residency at a club called Power House, playing grunge, alternative and rock. Right after school i moved to Witbank where I was resident at Equinox and another club (sorry, forgot the name) and since my influence was the like of Prodigy, Dj Nelson and Dj Adrian, I started getting the speed garage scene for a few years. 2 years down the line I moved back to George and got a residency at a local hotspot called Carousel.

Since they catered for a wide age group, I soon had to learn how to play various genres from 70's and 80's to lollipop sing along music. We hosted many events, bands and dj's @ Carousel such as, modeling shows, Just Jinger, Boo, Springbok Nude Girls, Nelson, Surge, Dizzy, Speedy and MANY other top names in the industry. Getting exposed to this variety of entertainment did my career and experience the world of good. After 2 years at Carousel, I parted to become a freelance Dj as I saw the gap in making myself available to other gigs around the area that can boost my experience and get my name out there. I started playing at various other clubs such as Station in Mossel Bay, Al's in Knysna, Rock Art in Oudtshoorn and soon my details ended up with organizers and brand reps that started booking me for more and more events. This started landing me gigs at the annual KKnK in Oudtshoorn, the Knysna Oyster Festival and Matric Rage in Plett. This turned into recurring bookings for me over a period of a few years.

I was asked to stand in for a Dj randomly one Tuesday evening at Stones in George and after my set, the manager was so impressed he wanted me on board. Myself and Dj Ryan ended up getting that place pumping in no time and National management got word of me as well as the dj agency for Stones. This lead into me training the girls for the sisters of spin competition for George and Knysna and one of the girls I trained came second in the finals.

I was offered a residency at Stones in Knysna where things were really rocking. During this time I was approached by a local radio station, Eden FM, and they asked me to host the hip hop and r&b show on Thursday evenings. This added on more experience sitting the studio presenting a show, it was something different, and I LOVED it! After 2 years I decided to move to Cape Town to spread my wings and get more experience.

The dj agency for Stones was based in Cape Town so they got me into venues from the get-go. I started playing at Privilege, Ku De Ta and Cubana in Edward street as well as Cubana Newlands and Hermanus. My Dj career was sky rocketing! I was rocking the dance floors, managers and club owners were super impressed! After a major setback, I had to return to George to

start over. This was probably the best thing that ever happened to me. Starting from the bottom was not easy, but I got my music library up to scratch and started playing at the local clubs again.

I got bookings again for the Knysna Oyster Festival and the major boost for me was the IRB 7's that was hosted in George. I played in the VIP and Heineken tent for the 1st 2 years and the 3rd year, I landed the stadium dj gig, playing to well over 30 000 people. In April 2008, I was flown up to a ski resort in Livigno, Italy, where I dj'd at 2 different venues for 3 weeks during the closing of the season – it was an incredible experience to play overseas!

Mickey hosted the Hip Hop and R & B show on Eden FM a few years ago. This ran for about a year until the station had to shut down due to broadcasting license issues.

Today they are up and running again and going strong. Currently he is co-hosting a technology talk show on Knysna FM every Friday from 10:30 to 11:00 called Tech Chat, along with presenter, Eon Engelbrecht – its labelled “the fun and easy to understand technology talk show”. This has been running for about 3 years now.

In 2008, Mickey was flown up to play at a number of places all over Livigno, Italy. This was a real push adding international status and being able to bring this experience back to the clubs and my students.
