Salomon Featherbed Trail Run – Event MC Tuesday 7 July 2015:
I was rather nervous when I got booked to MC for this event as I have never MC'd a trail running event before. Nevertheless, I knew I could pull it off and went in with the confidence of a ninja 😛 In a nutshell, the modus operandi of the day rolls out like this: There are 2 trails, the Coelacanth (15km) & The Seahorse (11km) Trail Run which repeats 3 times on the day – early morning, mid day and late afternoon – each run is limited to 450 runners and each of the events was sold out except the late afternoon run (roughly 175 runners).
Once registered, you gather on the jetty and board the various vessels of the Featherbed company which consist of 3 legs, heads explore, John Benn & The Paddle Cruiser. Runners are chartered across the Knysna lagoon to the Featherbed Nature Reserve which is the briefing and start of the 2 trails. They run the various routes from the West Head, along the lagoon toward Brenton on Lake, turning onto the train bridge that crosses over the lagoon back into town, around Laguna Grove finishing off behind the tent on the lagoon side of Cruise Cafe's parking lot.
Logistically, my words and pictures will never describe what has to go into organising an event like this with so many aspects to it – its not just pitch, run a route and wham bam thank you mam, you're done. This is probably the biggest and most organised event I have not only experienced, but had the privilege of MC'ing. The timing system is developed in-house by the Magnetic South Team and what makes it incredible is the sensor roughly 60m from the finish – every runner has a timing tag and when they pass that point, I receive the runner's name, surname and estimated finishing time (roughly within 1-2 seconds of the actual time) – what better way to “bring them home” BY NAME so the crowd can cheer – supporters, family and friends can quickly gather around the finish line when they hear the name that they are there to support, so they don't miss that well deserved crossing over the finish line. Every team member present that day had a specific task and everyone executed with perfection.
I commented at one stage to the owner's wife saying: “There is no stress levels at this event, it's amazing” The winner of the 15km race is Stuart Marais and he did it in 55:77 (that is INSANE). Well done to you Stuart and everyone else that entered and ran this amazing trail run event.
Entertainment was provided by an amazing local muso, Tigger, who blew the crowd away with his performance – he was accompanied by Brett on guitar and vocals. In closing, I can't help but feel honoured and favoured from above for being a part of this spectacular and & incredibly well organised event – if not THE best organised event I have ever witnessed.
Thank you the Magnetic South Team, everyone at The Feathebed Company, Paramedics, Runners and everyone else that was involved in making this event as successful as it is.
